President Donald Trump cautioned that a Supreme Court decision against his tariff powers would leave the United States “financially defenseless.”

President Donald Trump on Monday issued a sharp warning to the U.S. Supreme Court, saying that overturning his authority to impose tariffs under national security powers would pose the “biggest threat in history” to America’s economic independence.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The biggest threat in history to United States National Security would be a negative decision on Tariffs by the U.S. Supreme Court. We would be financially defenseless.”

In a second post, he declared that “only dark and sinister forces” want to end the nation’s ability to use tariffs as a tool for defense and leverage. “Because of Tariffs, easily and quickly applied, our National Security has been greatly enhanced, and we have become the financially strongest Country, by far, anywhere in the World,” he said. “Only dark and sinister forces would want to see that end!!!”

Trump’s remarks come as the Supreme Court considers whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) permits the president to impose sweeping import tariffs without congressional approval. Lower courts have ruled that such use of IEEPA exceeds constitutional and statutory limits, arguing that tariff authority rests with Congress.

Several justices have questioned the scope of executive power under the act, though others suggested tariffs could still be justified under national security exceptions. The outcome could redefine presidential authority over trade policy.

Trump accompanied his warning with a link to a Just the News article describing how European governments are now considering their own tariffs on China amid growing trade imbalances. The report noted that European leaders accuse Beijing of undercutting key industries through state-subsidized overproduction and dumping cheap goods into global markets.

French President Emmanuel Macron, following a visit to Beijing, said Europe may soon be forced to adopt “strong measures” if China refuses to address what he described as unsustainable trade disparities. “If they do not react, we Europeans will be forced … for instance, by imposing tariffs on Chinese products,” Macron told Les Echos after his trip.

Trump has long maintained that tariffs are essential for national defense and fair competition. During his administration, he accused China of manipulating its currency, subsidizing exports, and exploiting weak labor standards to dominate global markets. He argued that his trade policies reversed decades of American industrial decline and restored U.S. manufacturing strength.

Now, as the Supreme Court weighs whether those powers can continue, Trump insists the stakes are nothing less than the nation’s financial sovereignty. “We would be financially defenseless,” he repeated, warning that dismantling the tariff system would hand victory to the same foreign interests he says his policies were designed to confront.
