New U.S. National Security Strategy accuses European governments of undermining sovereignty and suppressing free speech as mass migration reshapes the continent.

The Trump administration has issued a stark warning to European leaders, declaring that Western civilization itself faces “civilizational erasure” unless the continent reverses its current course on mass migration and political censorship.
According to the newly released U.S. National Security Strategy, Europe’s economic difficulties are “eclipsed by the real and more stark prospect of civilizational erasure” in the coming decades. The 33-page document argues that uncontrolled migration, suppression of political dissent, and plummeting birthrates are eroding Europe’s identity and stability.

“The larger issues facing Europe include activities of the European Union and other transnational bodies that undermine political liberty and sovereignty, migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating strife, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, cratering birthrates, and loss of national identities and self-confidence,” the strategy states.
The report praises the growing strength of nationalist and populist movements across Europe—including Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD), Spain’s Vox Party, France’s National Rally, and Britain’s Reform Party—calling their rise a “revival of spirit” and a positive sign for the West. “America encourages its political allies in Europe to promote this revival,” the document notes, adding that “the growing influence of patriotic European parties indeed gives cause for great optimism.”
Trump adviser Jason Miller defended the strategy, responding to media criticism by accusing Politico and its parent company Axel Springer of “foreign influence” in European political narratives.
The strategy also warns of a demographic transformation that could see native Europeans become minorities in their own countries. “Over the long term, it is more than plausible that within a few decades at the latest, certain NATO members will become majority non-European,” the document states—a projection that has drawn sharp reactions across the continent.
Security analyst Shashank Joshi called the European sections of the strategy “shocking,” noting that they openly celebrate the rise of nationalist movements while criticizing current migration and censorship policies.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul dismissed Washington’s critique, saying Berlin would “discuss and debate these matters entirely on our own in the future, and do not need outside advice.”
The Trump administration’s message marks one of its most direct confrontations with Europe’s political establishment, coupling demographic warnings with an explicit endorsement of nationalist movements—signaling a foreign policy shift grounded in defending Western cultural identity as a matter of global security.
