Federal immigration authorities have arrested almost a dozen criminal illegal immigrants—including five Somali nationals—during a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) operation targeting violent offenders in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to Fox News, the arrests were part of “Operation Metro Surge,” a regional crackdown led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Among those taken into custody were individuals from Mexico and one from El Salvador, described by DHS officials as “the worst of the worst.”
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin faulted Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for policies she said have protected dangerous offenders.
“Sanctuary policies and politicians like Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey allowed these pedophiles, domestic terrorists, and gang members to roam the streets and terrorize Americans,” McLaughlin said in a statement. “ICE law enforcement are risking their lives to protect Minnesotans while their own elected officials sit by and do nothing. No matter when and where, ICE will find, arrest, and deport ALL criminal illegal aliens.”
The department posted photos of the suspects in a social media update, calling the list the “worst of the worst.” In one post, DHS identified Abdulkadir Sharif Abdi, a Somali national and former member of the Gangster Disciples gang who is now associated with Vice Lord Nation. Abdi has prior convictions for fraud, possession of stolen property, vehicle theft, and repeated probation violations.
The arrests come as federal and state investigators uncover widespread criminal activity tied to segments of Minnesota’s Somali migrant population, including fraud, theft, and welfare abuse schemes. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the state’s immigration policies, arguing they have endangered residents while draining public resources.
During a cabinet meeting this week, Trump reiterated his stance, saying that Somali migrants who have “brought crime and corruption” to Minnesota should return to their home country. “They come from hell and they complain and do nothing but bitch. We don’t want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it,” the president said.
Last month, Trump announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals living in Minnesota, citing gang activity, missing funds, and rising public safety concerns. “Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing,” he said at the time.
Federal officials said the latest Minneapolis operation is part of a nationwide enforcement push focusing on criminal fugitives and gang members who entered or remained in the country illegally. ICE has vowed to continue targeted actions regardless of local sanctuary policies that restrict cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
