WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States emphasized its commitment to a long-term partnership with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), stressing that its engagement will extend well beyond the current conflict, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during remarks on Thursday.
According to the press release, Rubio underscored that Washington’s goal is not only to help end the fighting but also to support the DRC in building sustainable security, stability, and shared economic prosperity. He noted that the U.S. aims to assist the country in becoming “rich and prosperous” through a mutually beneficial partnership, while reaffirming that progress “starts with security.”
When asked what message the United States has for civilians in eastern Congo awaiting peace, Rubio emphasized that a formal agreement is already in place and must now be implemented. He cautioned that, as with many conflicts, the process may experience “ups and downs,” similar to challenges seen in Gaza and other regions.
Rubio added that both governments — at the highest levels — have committed to specific steps to end hostilities, and the United States will stay closely involved. “Now we have to make sure those things happen, and we’ll be engaged every step of the way,” he said.
