A suspect accused of placing pipe bombs near the U.S. Capitol the day before the January 6, 2021, protests has been arrested in Virginia.

Officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested the suspect, identified as Brian Cole, early Thursday, reported Fox News, citing law enforcement sources.

The pipe bombs were placed near the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic National Committees roughly 16 hours before they were discovered by authorities. A bomb squad later detonated the device found outside the RNC. A suspicious package was also located at the DNC.

The NBC News report described the arrest as “a breakthrough in a case that has stymied investigators for nearly five years.” The FBI had repeatedly sought public assistance and released new surveillance footage of the suspect in January 2025, estimating the individual to be about 5 feet 7 inches tall and wearing Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a gold logo.

Images shared on social media show close-ups of the suspect’s clothing. The bureau had increased its reward to $500,000 for information leading to an arrest and released video footage of the suspect walking through D.C. streets with a bag while wearing a grey hoodie, black pants, mask, and gloves.
