For Morgan Silva, a dental hygienist from California, one such moment came when she least expected it — while she was at work, far from home, and utterly unaware that her toddler was about to embark on an unsupervised adventure. But in that chaos, one unlikely hero emerged: their loyal pit bull, who, without hesitation, stepped into a protective role that no one could have anticipated.
Morgan had left that morning, like any other, to fulfill her work duties, leaving behind her two boys — one just 8 months old, the other nearly 2 — under the care of her husband. The couple was always vigilant when it came to keeping a close eye on their children, particularly around the family’s two pit bulls.
“We’re very good about keeping our dogs at a safe distance from other people, and we're always watching our kids around them because we understand that dogs can sometimes be unpredictable,” Morgan shared. But even the most prepared parents can’t foresee every twist of fate.
The morning of the incident began like any other. A solar company had come to the Silva home to install panels on the roof, and in order to access the backyard, the workers needed to go through the side gates. Morgan's husband stepped outside to unlock the gates, and in a split second, their adventurous toddler opened the front door and followed his father out.
“I was at work, and my husband was home with the boys,” Morgan recalled. “We had a company come to our home to install solar on our roof, and they needed my husband to go out front to unlock our side gates so they could have access to our backyard.” But as her husband hurried outside, the unexpected happened — her toddler followed right behind him. “As soon as he did, my toddler followed quickly behind, opening the front door on his own,” she shared. “My heart sank.”
To add an extra layer of surprise, one of the family’s pit bulls — a 5-year-old dog with a heart as big as his size — followed the toddler out the door. As Morgan would later see in the video footage, it wasn’t just a dog following a child. It was a dedicated protector stepping into action.
“Both of our dogs are obsessed with our kids and think of them as their own babies,” Morgan explained. The dogs, particularly the younger one, are always by their children’s side, watching over them in their own way.
However, Morgan’s relief at her dog’s actions came after what was undoubtedly a heart-stopping moment. The toddler, on his own, was free to wander. The solar installers, who were working nearby, noticed the door open and stood by, keeping a watchful eye on the young boy.
“Luckily, the workers were right there to see my toddler open the front door,” Morgan said. “They stood there watching him as my husband continued to unlock the gates.”
At first, the workers were uncertain how the pit bull would react to the situation, given the common perception of pit bulls as dangerous. But Morgan was confident in her dog’s gentle nature and knew the pit bull would protect, not harm.
“We’ve never had aggressive dogs or had them act aggressively toward people,” she reassured.
As the toddler tottered near the street, the pit bull remained close, cautiously watching but never acting aggressively. Instead, it kept the child from wandering too far.
“The kind men stood there to make sure our son didn’t run far from the house or into the street,” Morgan continued. “But then they noticed quickly our pit bull also came out front and was immediately more cautious because they didn’t know if our dog was kind or how he would react to strangers.”
Morgan’s heart swelled with gratitude as she recalled the workers’ cautious yet caring approach. “We are thankful the workers reacted the way they did, helping us recognize that our son was at the front and keeping a close eye on him.”
In this moment of panic, the unspoken bond between the dog and child was clear — a shared understanding that the dog would not let the child go unprotected.
“Even when people come to our door or come over to our house, we put our dogs outside so people feel comfortable to come in,” Morgan explained, showing just how careful she and her husband are in managing their dogs' interactions with others. “But with our kids, it’s different. Our dogs are part of the family.”
Morgan’s husband, upon realizing the escape, rushed back to the front of the house, pulling the toddler and the dog back inside. The crisis was averted, but the weight of the moment wasn’t lost on Morgan.
“My heart sank when I saw the video,” she admitted. “We’re so good about keeping an eye on our kids, and we always watch them around the dogs as well.”
It was a humbling reminder of how quickly things could go awry, but also a testament to the loyalty and protection that can come from the most unexpected sources.
