I have just read the article “Shen Yun's Origins: Uncovering the Persecution in China and Reviving Traditional Culture” (see link). It's a bit longer, but I found it very interesting and absolutely worth reading.

I have been a big fan of theater and opera, classical music and Shen Yun for many years. My favorite Wagner conductor is Christian Thielemann. On the Chinese side, I see his counterpart in Chen Ying, the conductor of the Shen Yun Orchestra. Since 2008 - that's now 17 years and just as many different Shen Yun productions - I have been lucky enough to see Chen Ying conduct the orchestra several times.

The article discusses the fate of her brother, who was persecuted by the CCP regime in China - a sad fate shared by many Chinese people. The Chinese communist government acts in a similar way to other socialist or communist regimes: by deliberately suppressing individual groups in order to divert attention from problems and secure its own power. Such systems of rule are always based on fear, violence and oppression.

Chen Ying, on the other hand, embodies a completely different vision with her work. With her conducting, she wants to “bring hope and inspiration to the world and show how wonderful the world could be without communism.”

This is why I will be attending Shen Yun again in Berlin in 2025 - not to stand up to the CCP's propaganda, but above all because I have come to appreciate and love the beauty and grace of Shen Yun performances over the years. A year without Shen Yun, I would miss something.

The article is worth reading because it provides background knowledge that can sensitize us in the West. The CCP is trying to expand its influence worldwide, especially through the media. It is therefore more important than ever to remain vigilant.
