Lyrics of the Melody of a Pacified Storm - Su Shi, Song Dynasty

The Melody of a Pacified Storm

- lyrics from Su Shi, Song Dynasty

On March 7, 1082, I got caught in the rain on the Sand Lake Road, and some people went ahead with their rain gear, and my fellow travellers felt woefully out of sorts, but only I didn't feel the same way. After a while the sky cleared up, so I made this lyrics.

Listen not to the rain beating against the bamboo leaves.

Why not sing out laut and walk calmly.

Bamboo cane and straw sandals are better than saddle. Who's scared?

In a straw cloak, still spend my life in mist and rain.

Drunken, I am sobered by whistling of the wind in spring.

slightly chilly.

The sun peeked over the hilltop, greeted us at the right time.

Looking backward at the stormy and depressing place I came from,

go back home, it doesn't matter if it's stormy or sunny.

Interpretation and comment:

This lyrics was written in the third year of the author's relegation to Huangzhou.

This poem symbolises the impermanence of life with the changes of rain and sunshine, implying that one should realise the ups and downs in life. As long as we stick to our spiritual world, not proud of the good times, not afraid of the bad times, we will have fewer worries and more peace and happiness. The author writes in a funny and humorous tone about what he feels and thinks when he encounters rain on the way, expressing an optimistic and open-minded attitude towards life.

This lyrics has accompanied Chinese for more than a thousand years, and it is still fresh and encouraging. With her melodious voice, Ms. Le Li demonstrates Su Shi's open-mindedness in the face of adversity. Su Shi was relegated to a remote place even in his old age. What kind of cultivation and mindset did he have to write such beautiful and optimistic Song lyrics?
