Ruth Asante found the dog sitting calmly at the base of a fountain on a Tuesday morning in November. The tag had a disconnected number. But tucked inside the collar was a folded note, slightly damp, handwritten in blue pen.

It began: If you find Goldie, please do not take her to the Caldwell City Animal Shelter.

The woman who wrote it — shelter worker Janet Morse — had released eleven dogs over the previous week to people she trusted, because the facility was three weeks from unannounced closure and the director had not initiated the required transfer protocols. Goldie was the last.

By midnight the story had been shared from forty-one countries. The shortfall was covered. The director resigned.

This is the story of the note, the dog, and what one person's decision to write clearly and carefully in the middle of the night actually did.
