The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) finalized a new rule replacing the open-ended "duration of status" (D/S) policy with fixed terms. Under the regulation, F-1 student visas and J-1 exchange visitor visas are generally capped at four years, while I-visa foreign journalists are limited to 240 days (90 days for Chinese nationals). The rule takes effect on September 15, and those requiring more time will need to formally petition for extensions.
