The Château de Méan (also known as the Château des Comtes de Méan) is a former 18th-century pleasure castle located in Saive, in the municipality of Blegny, in the province of Liège.
📜 History and Origins: Construction: Built around 1720 by Pierre de Méan, alderman of Liège. Coat of Arms: The façade features a sculpted stone dated 1731.
Key Figure: Birthplace of François-Antoine-Marie-Constantin de Méan, the last Prince-Bishop of Liège (1792) and the first Primate of independent Belgium (1831).
Abandonment: Abandoned by the family in 1794 in the face of Republican troops.
🏛 Architecture and Current State: Structure: A large quadrilateral built of brick and limestone, built upon a former castle farm.
State: The building is currently abandoned and in a state of serious disrepair.
Urban exploration (Urbex): The site has become a popular but unsafe location for urban exploration enthusiasts.
Note: Do not confuse this 18th-century building with the nearby medieval ruins of the Old Castle of Saive.
