The southern scythemarked butterflyfish (Prognathodes carlhubbsi) is a rare and elegant deep-reef species found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly around the coasts of Central and South America. It has a slender, laterally compressed body with a pale white to silvery base color, marked by curved dark bands that resemble scythe shapes, giving the species its name. A distinct dark band runs through the eye, and the fins may show soft yellow or translucent tones. Like other members of its genus, it prefers deeper reef environments and rocky slopes, often below typical diving depths. This species typically grows to about 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) and feeds on small invertebrates and zooplankton. Its rarity and refined pattern make it a fascinating and seldom-seen butterflyfish.
