We Returned After 30 Years... Everything Changed
KANSAS CITY
Has this antique mall quietly become one of the Midwest’s best destinations for serious collectors? We return after 30 years to find out.
A lot has changed in 30 years! We revisit River Market Antiques in Kansas City, Missouri, for the first time since its inception, discovering whether it has grown stronger or declined with age. At first glance, it seems familiar, with booths full of 1970s décor, large displays of barware, and cute children's collectibles from Smurfs to Fisher-Price. But as we turn the corner, its transformation into a serious antique center becomes unmistakable. Rows of gleaming costume jewelry, designer MCM furniture displayed against gallery walls of original vintage art, and true antiques like Dante bookends, a 1910s Reynaud lamp, and porcelain hatpin holders reveal just how much this place and its dealers have grown in knowledge and merchandise quality.
We find deals on every floor of this 1910s brick storefront, along with discoveries we have never seen here before. Tamac and Winart dinnerware, a 1920s Carlock photo, an antique French enameled thermometer, and a Sellers MCM hutch all stand out, and many of these finds are priced for us to take home. Amberina glass tiles, German scenic carved furniture, and another case of turquoise and enameled jewelry show that this destination continues to grow in sophistication, quality, and variety.
A space filled with instruments salvaged by a local luthier, a basement full of Roseville, Weller, and McCoy pottery, and upper levels packed with Art Deco Coke signs, antique shipwright's axes, oddities, and an entire floor of genuine vintage clothing give this antique mall remarkable depth. Every level offers another surprise, making it easy to spend hours exploring its collections. We pack our purchases and leave impressed by the remarkable evolution of this quality antique and vintage center, already looking forward to our next visit.
