Designed by Place Designs, Home in the Garden (Amma) is a 7-bedroom luxury home in Angamali, Kerala: a 1-acre tropical residence built around landscaped gardens, water features, and a triple-height living volume. Take the full home tour.

The residence was shaped by a complex site: road access from the south, higher adjoining land to the west, and an eastern parcel added only at a later stage. Responding to these conditions, Place Designs oriented the house eastward to overlook a large garden created on the added land. An elevated walkway along the western edge aligns with the neighbouring land level before gently descending into the site. The client's requirement for a dedicated entertainment space led to two separate entrance gates and a series of enclosure walls defining distinct front, side, and rear yards with varying degrees of privacy. Midway through construction, the brief expanded to include an extensive attic level for recreation, gym, and games — requiring a redesign of the main roof slope and a second external staircase to meet fire-safety regulations.

The house employs an RCC frame structure with semi wire-cut brick masonry and sloping tiled roofs on steel box-section rafters and purlins. A refined material palette includes teak wood for joinery, ceilings, and interior panelling, Vox ceilings for exterior soffits, Italian marble for interior floors and walls, granite for verandahs and walkways, and exposed random rubble masonry for the compound walls. These rugged stone enclosures give a strong visual contrast to the lush landscape that occupies nearly all the open space within the property.
Spatially, the design is organised around a carefully choreographed sequence of arrival and garden views. Two gates branch from a recessed entry: one leading to a guest living pavilion surrounded by amenities — a badminton/half-basketball court, covered pool, and landscaped gardens — while the other opens into an entrance court connected by a curved pathway overlooking the eastern garden and a cascading waterfall. The symmetrical main house features a central living and dining hall with garden views on three sides, with four ground-floor bedrooms in the western wing connecting to a double-height rear sit-out over a water feature and bridge. A central spine containing a lift and staircase links three first-floor bedrooms, including an expansive master suite with study and walk-in wardrobe, while the remaining bedrooms open onto landscaped roof terraces. The staircase rises through a dramatic triple-height volume to a second floor housing a home theatre, gym, and rooftop deck.
