How Big Are Whales, Really?

Whales are so large that it can be surprisingly difficult to understand their true size from a normal photo or video.

In this video, I’m using rare drone footage to show blue whales, humpback whales, and orcas alongside dolphins, boats, people, and even other whales, giving us something familiar to compare them to in the same shot.

Seeing a blue whale next to a humpback, an orca beside a dolphin, or a whale passing beneath a boat puts their size into perspective in a way numbers alone never can.

These are some of the clearest whale size comparisons I’ve been lucky enough to capture, including several moments where different species appear together in the same frame.

Featured in this video:

Blue whales
Humpback whales
Orcas
Common dolphins
Whale watching boats
People and swimmers
Rare aerial drone comparisons

All wildlife footage was filmed responsibly and in accordance with local regulations aboard Gone Whale Watching in San Diego.

Domenic Biagini captures stunning aerial footage of blue, humpback, and orca whales, offering a unique perspective on their immense scale. By positioning these marine giants alongside boats and smaller dolphin species, the footage provides a rare visual demonstration of how these creatures compare to each other and to humans in the open ocean.
