Cultural Note
In Chinese, 吃过 (chīguo) literally means "have eaten before." The word 过 (guo) is an experience marker that tells us someone has had the experience of doing something at least once.
Examples:
我去过中国。
Wǒ qùguo Zhōngguó.
I've been to China.
我看过这部电影。
Wǒ kànguo zhè bù diànyǐng.
I've seen this movie.
我吃过北京烤鸭。
Wǒ chīguo Běijīng kǎoyā.
I've had Beijing roast duck.
Remember: 过 is used for life experiences—things you've done before—making it the perfect grammar pattern for talking about foods you've tried.
