The Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4 D-FEML, displayed as "Red 12" (Werknummer 1983), is one of the most historically significant flying Luftwaffe fighters in Europe. Unlike many post-war Hispano Buchón conversions that have appeared on the air show circuit over the years, D-FEML is built around an original wartime Bf 109 airframe. The aircraft was manufactured as an E-4 before later serving in the far north with Jagdgeschwader 5. In January 1942 it crash-landed in northern Russia after bring shot down by a Hawker Hurricane of the Soviet Air Force - the wreck remained preserved in the frozen landscape for more than fifty years before being recovered in 1993.
