He had handled iron his entire life — German work, Italian work, every lineage that had crossed the Atlantic. He said the rivets didn't match anything he had ever been taught to read. The metal's composition, tested eighty years later, required furnace control that didn't exist in 1879. The Smithsonian has no record of ever receiving it. The plate has not been seen since the morning a federal agent walked out of the foreman's office with it wrapped in canvas.
