What are math word problems? Math word problems are those mathematical equations presented in the form of shapes before kids come to the point of translating them into numbers. Word problems are good in learning because in addition to the mathematical skills that the kids will end up having, they will also learn more about the shapes.

The whole idea behind math word problems is linking those shapes to numbers and this means that kids should be good at counting and at the same time learn subtraction and addition through the story problems that are created with these shapes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5gutmYmsaA).

There are some steps to consider going through when it comes to math word problems or story problems. The first step is about counting the number of shapes drawn on the board and then managing to answer the questions imposed with these stories (which will be given by the parent to the child). On the other hand, story problems could be dealt with in a reverse way in which the child will be the one making up a story from the numbers given to him/her by the parent (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeCEbvUvPEo).

Word and story problems could teach the child addition and subtraction in a bit of challenging way for the child but it will always work best with their thinking skills which they are going to definitely improve while trying to translate the shapes and bring up stories from the numbers they receive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pWka6dk3b4).

In the world of math, there are lots of words to be used, when we are referring to subtraction, we could also say minus, taking away, removing, etc. and that is not the end of it, but there are lots of words that will be translated as a subtraction equation. One of the examples we have here is drawing different squares, asking the child what shape is this and eventually asking them if one fell down and was "broken", how many will they end up having and how could they translate this into a mathematical equation.

Parents should also encourage the child to make up a story through numbers, such as asking him/her to represent number three through any shape they want to draw, then ask them to add two to that shape then remove one, etc. until the kid manage to make up a whole story from these different numbers and at the same time succeed at translating them into numbers and mathematical equations.

Along the journey of teaching the child these methods, talk through the steps with them and make sure that they understand them well enough to manage handling them and doing the needed calculations. In addition to that, since drawing shapes will be one of the steps, parents should stress on asking the kids about these shapes, what they are, how they are different from similar ones, etc. these will also manage to make the whole idea of learning the shapes much easier for the child (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-uRABe5sFE).

Give your child the time needed in order to learn new things because kids are not all the same and some might take longer times than others. It is also important to help the child through giving them the chance to practice because that's how they are eventually going to learn, through lots of practicing.

Could you now teach your child more about word and story problems? Follow these different steps we have provided and help them create their own stories and translate the shapes they are seeing into numbers and equations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEK689u7hJs).
