How to make addition for big numbers much easier for the child? There are different mental math strategies found out there, one of them is partitioning and this is the one we have brought this time to teach kids to add big numbers and also know more about place value.

The whole idea behind partitioning is to divide the number into smaller ones; hundreds, tens and unites, in order to make it easier for sorting these numbers and then recombining them one more time. Partitioning is all about the idea of taking every single number in the addition equation, dividing it into hundreds, tends and units then sorting these numbers together by adding the hundreds alone, the tens alone, and the units alone, and eventually recombining the three answers together to bring the final answer for the first given equation.

A lot of people might think that this method is harder than doing the addition as it is - it is when compared to smaller numbers that consist of tens and units only - but it is actually not because it becomes easier for kids to add the hundreds together without dealing with big complicated numbers, the same with the tens, and eventually come to the units which are easy when less than 10 and could be dealt with differently when more than 10.

This is a mental math strategy which means that kids could of course start the whole partitioning thing on paper but eventually when they practice it all and get used to it, they should move forward and do it in their heads. At first it might be a little bit difficult for them, but over the time they will manage to do it all without any difficulty and will just write down the final answer.

To understand it more, we could give you an example. Try adding 342+229 together. First, partition 342 to hundreds, tens and units to become 300+40+2, and second, partition 229 to become 200+20+9. Now sort the numbers together to become 300+200=500, 40+20=60, and 2+9=11. The final step is recombining the numbers together to add the tens and units first since the units are more than 10 which will be 71 and then adding it to the 500 for the final answer to be 571.

To sum it all up, there are three different steps in this mental math strategy that the kid will need to go through: the first is partitioning, the second is sorting, and the third is recombining. It is important to use these different terminologies with the kids and let them know this mathematical vocabulary in order for them to understand all the different words and know what they are supposed to do.

Sometimes specific methods might not work with addition but are considered good with subtraction and vice versa, so parents should always make sure that they are choosing the right strategies when they are teaching their kids some mathematical operations.

Since it is a mental math strategy, kids should at some point only depend on making it all in their heads without depending on the pen and paper, so keep practicing with the child until they understand how it should be all made and manage to move on from writing every single step down to the point of actually doing the calculations in their minds.
