Subtraction Games for Kids - How to Subtract - Subtraction for Kids - Subtraction KS1 - KS1 Maths
How to subtract? This is the question that parents ask their children while they are homeschooling them and teaching them math. There are actually lots of different methods used for subtraction but the most important thing of all is teaching the kid the right order that should be applied on the numbers in the equation.
The easy and basic way of subtraction is the most important because it is the first step that kids take to learn this mathematical operation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcAwwP8PJbg). In this educational video, the focus is on the easiest and simplest ways used in subtraction which is the number lines (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reDo59ACevE).
Recently, we have heard lots of teachers at schools saying that number lines are like giving the kids a chance to cheat and we want to stress on the point that this is actually wrong because number lines make it easier for the kid to count and solve the mathematical problems and not for giving the kids the chance to cheat.
The first and the most important thing in teaching kids to subtract is placing the numbers within the mathematical equation in the right order, the bigger number should always come first, and this is important to stress on because it is not the same with addition or multiplication (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v0AjM0jcPA).
On the number line, the kid should have specific numbers written down, for example from one to ten, and then the kid should place the first dot on the bigger number in the equation and then count the other number with jumping backwards. This is one of the easiest methods used with teaching kids how to subtract and it is not about letting them cheat, but it is more of helping them to easily solve the mathematical problem they are faced with.
We have tried other subtraction methods with the kids before according to their age and there are different ones that turned out to be effective at the end. Some of the subtraction lessons we have tried with the kids are related to playing with the play doh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw91epryD28), there are also those related to the Lego pieces and which teach the kid more about the inverse operations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsQHpE6D6PQ), there are also the subtraction games that kids could play with Lego or with the small cartoon characters which they prefer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-YBC4LPOQw) and there are lots of general subtraction games that could make the learning process much more interesting for the kids and thus make the whole process easier for them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1yYbfMfig4).
It is not important to choose one specific method to use with subtraction for the kids, but it is important to settle on the one which they consider the easiest for them, the one they feel comfortable with while solving the problem they are handling. Parents should just try different methods to find the one most suitable for the kids, the one which they are going to love the most.
There are different educational videos on our channel that could teach the kids math, there are those about addition, multiplication and division and not just subtraction (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdlIHYRnjAg). We have lots of games and ideas which parents could try out with their kids until they settle on the one they consider the best for them, and this is also important because it will not make the kid bored especially while being educated at home.
Number lines is definitely one of the easiest methods to be followed while teaching kids math, have you tried it before with any of the different mathematical operations that are found out there? Let us hear about your feedback especially if you have tried this method with your kids before.
If you still carry any questions related to subtraction methods or using the number line technique for subtraction, send these questions over and we will answer them all once we get the chance to help you.
