The four main components of mathematics are addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. Each of these is taught to children through different methods to help them with problem-solving (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zc96Kh8-GY).
Subtraction for kids is something children learn at KS1 in school and it usually comes directly after teaching them how to count (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYmMjMBjMcI) and giving them classes to know how to add (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEQQl0u2Muk), with harder mathematics following them like division and multiplication.
There are different ways to teach children subtraction which differ according to how difficult they may find it or the level of maths they are at. In subtraction, there is the basic subtraction method (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i62H7oT4LZw) and there are those which might appear to be a little bit harder, one of them is the story problems which also helps the child in knowing how to solve problems when it comes to math (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZr88-gukDM).
In this educational video, Michelle is using the story problem method in teaching the kids how to subtract and bring the final answer to any equation placed in front of them. When solving any problem, it is important to read the paragraph clearly in order to know what is needed from you and start solving it.
One of the methods that Michelle uses is called the RUCSAC, which stands for Read, Understand, Choose, Solve, Answer and Check, and this is the one that will teach the kid to go through the whole problem placed in front of him/her step by step.
At the beginning of their education, children will read the problem written down for them, they will make sure that they have understood it and know what is asked from them, choose the numbers and the other important words placed in the paragraph written that would help in solving it, answer the problem or the mathematical equation that was written down from the paragraph and then at the end double-checking the answer that was brought out.
Getting the final answer for the equation or the story the kids are dealing with is now considered easy and it could get trickier whenever the age of the kid comes up the ladder; whenever the kid gets older, the numbers used and how many of them are part of the equation could be bigger in order to make it harder for the kid and examine his/her abilities.
Subtraction is a little bit harder than addition but it is still considered easier than multiplication and division. Subtraction could be also taught to the kids through using mental math games which could be about the small toys that they already use to play with during the day.
Kids could learn subtraction with using play-doh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw91epryD28), they could learn it through using the building blocks or those small characters they have (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1yYbfMfig4), they could also play with Lego in order to learn subtraction and know more about how to handle it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdlIHYRnjAg) and lots of other mental math tricks which the kids could get introduced to while learning subtraction (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhWalcCRLX0).
One of the things we always encourage parents to do while homeschooling their kids is trying as much as they can to let the kids link between the things they learn in math and the real-life they are living, let them count while you are buying something, let them add things you have, etc. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzdK9bT9uOE). Real-life stories open the gate for something we have already mentioned in this video, which is problem-solving; when kids use their minds to solve the mathematical problems they have while learning math, they will end up being able to use their minds when it comes to solving their own problems in their daily life.
Always try to get creative with the math games for kids that you come up with in order to keep them excited about the whole idea of learning, and you could also play along with them :-)!
