What is STEM? Do you know how much important this is for your kids? Let's take you through an introduction about STEM and then show you a fun challenge which you could try with your kids.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math; in other words, we could refer to it as the future. We refer to STEM as the future because these are the different important fields which the kids have to learn in order to be able to access the future, they need to be comfortable with these fields before they go further to the next stage of their learning curriculum.

Why it is important to teach your kids STEM from an early age? It is important to expose your kids to STEM from an early age because STEM builds thinkers, creators, problem solvers, doers, innovators and inventors, and the more they start at an early age, the more they will manage to give more when they are grown ups.

There are different STEM activities which kids could practice to learn new things. In science, these activities include nature and earth sciences, chemistry and physics. In technology, the activities might include computers, smartphones, calculators, tablets, YouTube, and even more things that keep appearing every single day. In engineering, these kids' activities which we are referring to might include designing and building anything from bridges, towers to even simple machines and robots. Finally, when it comes to math, the activities are numerous which are about the counting, the sorting, the patterning, etc.

In this lesson and through this educational video, the part we are stressing on from STEM for kids is engineering and that is through letting them use their creativity to build a tower out of plastic straws and tape - these are the type of straws that could be bent so they could choose how they want to use them and how they want their towers to appear like at the end.

When you give your kids the chance to create something like this, you could stay right next to them in order to offer any help if they need to - you don't have to leave them and go - and you could even talk with them through the things they are trying to make, some problems appearing along the way and how they might solve them, etc. because this will give them more chance to think and try to bring solutions for the obstacles appearing in front of them and also use their creativity to build the tower.

Parents should always understand that kids think differently and their creativity might reach farther than they expect, so they should always leave them to do what they want and deal with the obstacles appearing all by themselves - and believe us, the towers always appear differently at the end, you will always get surprised.

Another important thing to mention about this activity is that it also helps with the fine motor skills, which is the movement and coordination of the arms, the legs, and the other large body parts and movements, because they will be working with their hands trying to stick the straws together and build the tower.

When it comes to the talk about the fine motor skills, there are different activities which you could try with their kids and we have some ideas and videos on our channel which you could also check such as the fine motor skills related to the letter formation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUENlTRKHu0) and the lesson about the fine motor skills development (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBXcl8zqY8w).

There are lots of other educational videos for kids which we have on our channel in different fields like math, English, science, and general information which you could depend on in order to find the interesting ways that you could teach your kids through instead of the known usual methods that kids are used to everywhere.

Watch the full video and enjoy how the kids got to build the tower and who managed to won the challenge at the end of the video. Whenever this is considered a challenge by the kids, the more they will try to bring out all their creativity in order to win the challenge and show you how creative they are when it comes to building the tower.
