The Cat That Inspired The Emperor
Emperor Uda was both intellectually astute and a forward-thinking ruler. He introduced numerous reforms and sought to strengthen the ethical standards among high-ranking officials. His keen interest in the practices of yin-yang divination and astrology, as well as his reliance on omens and forecasts, connected him to the ancient traditions of yin-yang dualism and the five elements. Through his writings, we gain not only insights into the Court's life but also rare glimpses into his private world.
This text originates from the golden age of the Japanese imperial court, when emperors still wielded absolute power, unlike the symbolic figureheads they would later become during the era of the samurai.
Thanks to this specific entry, written about his dear feline friend on 11th March 889, we also have the first definitive record of a domestic cat in Japan.
