History Profiles

Honda Tadakatsu was a renowned Japanese samurai, general, and daimyo—a feudal lord—who loyally served all three of Japan's great unifiers. He rose to prominence during the turbulent Sengoku period, a time marked by relentless civil wars and profound social upheaval. As the power of the Ashikaga shogunate—the militaristic government waned, regional lords, or daimyos, began to assert greater political authority, commanding armies far mightier than those of the declining shogunate.

The title of Shogun, though ceremonially granted by the Emperor, signified the true military ruler of Japan. Yet as the influence of the shoguns diminished, the nation descended into an era of near-constant warfare, where battles erupted with unceasing frequency.

It was amidst this chaos that the legend of Honda Tadakatsu was born. Celebrated for his unmatched swordsmanship and unwavering valor, he is said to have fought in 57 battles over the course of his life—never once receiving a single wound, earning him the moniker "The Warrior who surpassed Death itself". He is also remembered for his striking and distinctive armor, most notably the imposing helmet adorned with great antlers. Though such a bold design would have made him an obvious target on the battlefield, it seemed only to reflect his fearless spirit. Far from seeking concealment, Tadakatsu was renowned for his audacious charges into the heart of enemy lines, recklessly hurling himself into the fray in a relentless effort to break their formations and turn the tide of battle.

He also become one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Tokugawa, describing four highly effective samurai generals who fought on behalf of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who would rise to become the Shogun, effectively ending the sengoku period which finally ended the constant wars in Japan.

This is the tale of the warrior who surpassed Death itself, this is the story of Honda Tadakatsu.
