History Profiles

Few women in all of medieval history possessed the wealth, ambition, and political influence of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Born into one of the richest and most powerful dynasties in Europe, Eleanor inherited the vast Duchy of Aquitaine while still a young girl—an inheritance so immense that it made her one of the most sought-after brides in Christendom. Her lands stretched across much of southwestern France, richer and culturally more vibrant than many kingdoms themselves, granting her a level of independence almost unheard of for a woman of her age.

She would go on to become not just one queen, but two—first Queen of France through her marriage to Louis VII of France, accompanying him on the disastrous Second Crusade, before annulling that union in one of the most consequential separations in European history. Soon after, she married the young and formidable Henry II of England, forging an empire that stretched from the Scottish borders to the Pyrenees. Through this union, Eleanor became Queen of England and matriarch of what would become the mighty Angevin Empire.

Yet Eleanor was far more than a royal consort. In an age when women were expected to be ornamental, she acted as a political force in her own right—governing lands, managing courts, shaping diplomacy, and influencing succession politics across Europe. Her marriage to Henry helped consolidate power after the chaos of The Anarchy, the brutal English civil war that had torn the kingdom apart for nearly two decades. Through the rise of the Plantagenets, Eleanor stood at the centre of a new political order.

She was also mother to an extraordinary dynasty, giving birth to some of the most famous rulers of the Middle Ages, including Richard I of England—the legendary Lionheart—and John, King of England, whose disastrous reign would eventually lead to the signing of the Magna Carta. Her bloodline spread through Europe’s royal houses, binding kingdoms together through marriage, inheritance, and war.

But perhaps what made Eleanor truly remarkable was her refusal to be passive in a world built to silence women. She challenged kings, rebelled against her own husband, endured years of imprisonment, and still emerged as one of the most respected and feared figures in Christendom.

This is her story.
