Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, composed between 1904 and 1905, is often called his “Song of the Night,” though he never gave it an official program. Mahler uses unusual orchestration, such as guitar, mandolin, cowbells, and tenor horn, to evoke distant serenades and eerie nocturnal atmospheres.
