Introduction
Around 1900, the Grand Duchy of Finland was part of the Russian Empire, ruled by Tsar Nicholas II. In 1899, the ruler made the tactical mistake of restricting Finland’s autonomous rights. This sparked furious protests. To calm the mood, the Tsar eventually approved the first independent Finnish parliament. However, it was not until 1917 that Finland gained independence from Russia. In this heated political climate, the composer Jean Sibelius saw himself as the musical voice of his homeland, using his works to provide ideological support for the national movement. The performance of his symphonic poem “Finlandia” at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris served as a rallying cry. Finland’s national identity is inextricably linked to the national epic “Kalevala”. Around 1830, the philologist
Elias Lönnrot travelled through his Finnish homeland and listened to the old legends and myths told by the people. He collected these stories, both short and long, and published them as a book. The mysterious tales within inspired Sibelius to compose numerous works.
