Scientists Compared Sicilian DNA to Northern Italian DNA — They Are Not the Same People

Sicilians are not the same as Northern Italians. Genetic studies published
in Nature and Scientific Reports show Sicilian DNA is 37% Greek, 6% North
African, and up to 20% Norman Viking in some regions. In fact, Sicilians
are more genetically different from Northern Italians than Northern
Italians are from Germans. Backed by research from the University of Pavia,
this is the real genetic story of Sicily — three thousand years of
Mediterranean history written in their DNA.
