Daffodil (scientific classification: Narcissus; /nɑːrˈsɪsəs/) is a genus consisting mostly of perennial plants belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Narcissus has attractive flowers with six petal-like tepals surrounded by a cup-shaped or trumpet-shaped corona. The flowers are usually white or yellow (orange and pink in garden varieties).

Narcissus has been well known for both medicinal and ornamental properties since ancient times, but was officially described by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753). This genus includes ten sections and about 50 species. The number of species is inconsistent, depending on how they are classified, due to similarities between species and hybrids. This genus first appeared around the late Oligocene or early Miocene in the Iberian Peninsula and neighboring regions of southwestern Europe.
