When History Steps Aside Łukasz Stokłosa at the Royal Castle Pulse of Culture
When a monumental painting by Jan Matejko left the walls of the Royal Castle in Warsaw for conservation, its absence sparked an unexpected curatorial gesture. Instead of an empty space, contemporary paintings quietly moved in—first to fill the gap, then to subtly weave themselves deeper into the historic galleries.
In this edition of Pulse of Culture, we meet Łukasz Stokłosa, the artist at the heart of this unusual intervention. His works form the conceptual spine of Lśnienie, an exhibition that brings 29 contemporary paintings into dialogue with one of Poland’s most iconic historical interiors. Drawing on pop culture, film, camp aesthetics, and the legacy of the old masters, Stokłosa creates images that are sensual, ambiguous, and quietly unsettling.
