Drones for adjusters in 2026
I sat down with the team at Loveland Innovations for a wide-ranging conversation about where drone roof inspections actually stand for independent property adjusters in 2026 — from the day-to-day operational reality of flying claims to the AI under the hood, the legal and liability picture, and where the technology is headed next.
We start with the practical stuff every adjuster wants to know before they buy their first drone. What you actually need to carry in your truck for a full inspection day — drones, batteries, chargers, accessories, and how many roofs you can realistically inspect on a single charge.
Which drones the platform supports, how weather affects operations (wind, cold temps, rain), and what airspace authorization looks like in the real world when you're working near airports, military bases, national parks, and restricted airspace.
From there, we get into the AI itself. How the system identifies and classifies roof damage, what's actually happening under the hood when the AI analyzes a roof, and — importantly — how the technology has evolved since the early drone-denied claims that lost in court because of AI misidentification.
If you've been skeptical of drone-based claims handling, this section gets into what's genuinely different now.We also cover the licensing and legal landscape that every drone-curious adjuster needs to understand. Are licensed property adjusters required for this work, or can anyone with a drone do it? What are the real liability and insurance considerations for flying over someone's property? And how does Part 107 certification fit into the picture for adjusters who want to do additional commercial drone work outside of claims to generate extra income?
Roof falls continue to injure and kill adjusters every year, so we spend significant time on the safety side — the risk reduction when you take the roof climb out of the equation, drone bystander safety, area-clearing protocols, and how a trained commercial operator's safety profile compares to the hobbyist drone population.
Finally, we look at the bigger picture. Where carrier adoption actually stands right now — whether drone inspection is mainstream yet or still early adopter territory, whether any carriers are mandating drone inspections versus leaving it to adjuster and IA firm discretion. And we close with one of the most important conversations in the industry right now: BVLOS — Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations — and what Part 108 will unlock for CAT deployment once it's finalized.
If you're an adjuster considering adding drone work to your toolkit, or you've been flying for a while and want to understand where the industry is headed, this conversation covers the full landscape.
