Fig Tree Hit by a Late Frost? Why Thinning May Ensure Fruit Set
A quick update on availability: If you want a fig tree, now is a great time. I'll be slowly listing 100s of fig trees on my website over the next 45 days, and while it might be early, I also offer gift cards for Father's Day. Check it out! https://www.figboss.com/gift-card
In this video, Ross the Fig Boss addresses the severe damage caused by a historic late frost in spring 2026, which impacted roughly 80% of his fig trees in the Philadelphia area. Because late frosts destroy the primary upper buds, affected trees experience a shift in growth hormones (auxins) and are forced to leaf out from much lower points, putting fruit development about two to three weeks behind schedule. This setback triggers a survival response where the tree aggressively pushes out an excessive number of new shoots. If left unchecked, this explosion of crowded growth creates dense internal shading, which prevents the canopy from receiving the intense, sustained sunlight absolutely required to trigger fruit bud formation for the season.
To ensure a successful harvest despite the frost, Ross emphasizes the critical need for immediate intervention through selective canopy thinning. Growers are advised to use pruning shears or their hands to clear out weak, crowded, or crisscrossing branches that grow inward or compete for the same space. Removing these redundant shoots early prevents the tree from wasting vital energy on unnecessary growth while opening up the canopy to maximize sun exposure. For branches you want to keep, Ross also suggests staking or bending them outward to ensure every remaining section gets its own dedicated "island" of sunlight to successfully kickstart fruit production.
