How do you define success? What does success mean to you? Success to me means being a man with a good paying job ($60,000 a year or more), having a family and children and owning a Porche or a BMW. Success to me is retiring from a job with a good pension and doing things that you like to do. Success to me is being alive, thus even if you make mistakes in life, you are going to be successful. Success is doing something you like and having a good time doing it. Life is too short, so enjoy it while you still have it. THOMAS RASETA Osbourn Park Money, power and position have traditionally been considered the signs of one who is a success. These things are nice, but they are only a small part of true success. True success comes when people value you. If you are not valued, you are not respected. If you are not respected, you are not a success. Respect is important because without it, there is no way to be a success. Power, money and position are all the results of respect. Respect cannot be given by someone else until you respect yourself. Self-respect comes when you are satisfied with what you have done or when you realize your potential. When you realize your potential, you are certain to be a success. To be viewed by others as a success is my personal definition of success. I would want people to value me and to respect me. I do not think money and position are indicators of success. Only when other people think that I am a success, will I feel that I am truly a success. DONNA LIVINGSTON Woodbridge Although the definition of success varies from one individual to another, it remains a melange of feelings for all which includes perseverance leading to a desired accomplishment. To me, success is achieving set goals by way of doing the very best I can. The emotional aspect consists of being mentally challenged and ultimately finding myself content with what I have done. I gain this by continually performing at the highest level of quality that I possibly can. Throughout my life, many successes have come and gone, but the accomplishment which is the source of my greatest pride is my achievement of academic excellence. Early on, I consciously set the goal to strive for good grades and become well-rounded. So far, all is well. For the future, I plan to further my education and obtain success in this area. Another goal I have is to be successful in general. In everything I attempt, I hope I will give it my all and persist until the deed is done the best it can be done. As the adage says, "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right." I truly believe that and base my goals upon it. Whatever the goal may be, I know I am capable of achieving it. Success is a state if mind, and I plan to live within its boundaries. STEPHEN FARMER Stonewall Jackson Success means something very different to different kinds of people. When I was little and people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I never really knew for sure. Sometimes I would tell them I wanted to have some exotic occupation that I had seen on TV or sometimes I would tell them I wanted to be rich. But whatever I told them, I knew that I would feel successful if I was doing something I enjoyed and something that made me happy. I wouldn't want to wake up one morning and realize that even though I was wealthy or powerful, I wasn't happy with my life. I feel successful when I do something that helps other people and also when I am praised by others for my work.
