Khanty-Mansi Okrug (often called Yugra) is where the wild Siberian taiga meets one of the richest oil regions in the world. This region produces a huge share of Russia’s oil, and there are many modern cities built around energy industry. But what makes this region unique is the mix of modern oil cities and extreme nature. Here you can see a strong contrast between industrial development and indigenous traditions. The region is named after two native groups: Khanty and Mansi. They traditionally live as reindeer herders, hunters and fishermen. Their culture and language are still preserved, though under pressure from modernization. In this video we will meet the Khanty family living Far North in a remote tundra.
