How To Understand Mystery Babylon in Revelation

Who or what is meant by the Mother of Harlots in the book of Revelation. Some have understood it to be ancient Rome, the European Union,the Catholic Church, the Pope or even America.

Whomever this prophetic figure is, she is said to be a queen and not a widow. She affirms not only that she had a husband but also that he was yet alive when the prophecy was written in the time of John, the apostle.

So, we must ask, How is it that anyone could claim that Rome, (a highly favored candidate for this mystery woman), was every married to God? When did God join himself in Holy Matrimony to a heathen nation?

Would that not have made God himself an adulterer, since he/Christ had claimed a relationship with the church, 2 Corinthians 11:2, Eph. 5:25-27 and Revelation 19, (a text which follows the discussion and demise of the harlot of the apocalypse?)

Could not the same be said for all the nations, not to mention those outside of the historical framework and setting of the New Testament in the time of John, such as the EU or America?

In the case of the latter, i.e. America, why are believers yet hanging around in America if they truly believe she is the immoral mystery woman of Revelation? Does not God plainly say, "Come out of her my people that you do not receive her plagues?" (Rev. 18:6)

In addition, how could this mystery woman be the Pope, since he is a man? There seems to be a gender problem here. Since the woman claims to be married that really becomes suspect since Pope's are not married and if her were, he would obviously be married to a male, since the text says she is a woman. That flies directly into the face of Catholic doctrine and is so obviously false.
