A Long Island Rail Road engineer thought he was looking at a lifeless orange cat on the tracks in Lindenhurst, New York. But then the cat moved his head and everything changed.
What followed was a careful rescue involving MTA police officers, railroad workers, and animal rescuer John DeBacker. With trains nearby and the third rail creating serious danger, crews had to shut off power and coordinate every step before anyone could safely reach him.
The injured cat, later named Garfield, had survived a devastating impact. He was found with serious injuries, including a broken front limb, a broken nose, and severe hip trauma. But even after everything he had been through, rescuers said he was gentle, affectionate, and willing to accept help.
Garfield’s rescue is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people stop, pay attention, and refuse to give up on a life that still has a chance.
