From Whiteout to Golden Light - Jotunheimen, Norway

Apr 29, 2026

After driving more than 300 km into Jotunheimen National Park, I arrived at Sognefjellet just after the mountain road had reopened following the long Norwegian winter.

The forecast called for snow and strong wind, but the weather was calm as I skied into the remote mountains to set up camp. Surrounded by endless white terrain and completely alone, it felt peaceful at first.

Not long after pitching the tent, the conditions changed completely.

Heavy snowfall and powerful wind turned the landscape into a total whiteout, forcing me to stay inside the tent through the entire night while the storm howled outside. With no people anywhere nearby and deep winter conditions still holding the mountains, the isolation felt very real.

Sunrise the next morning brought more clouds and flat light, and it seemed like the trip would end without the conditions I had hoped for.

Then suddenly, the clouds began to lift.

Soft golden light, drifting fog and distant mountain peaks slowly appeared across the frozen landscape, creating one of the most beautiful winter photography sessions I’ve experienced in Norway.

Using my Nikon Z6 III and telephoto lens, I captured the changing light and atmosphere before packing down the tent and skiing back to the car — thankfully still not snowed in, and with the road still open.

This is a silent cinematic winter adventure featuring remote camping, skiing, harsh weather and landscape photography deep in the mountains of Norway.
