The Scale of the Universe - A Visualization of How Small We Are

From the planets in our own Solar System to the edge of the observable universe, this video is a journey through scale - showing just how small we really are.

We begin with a quick tour of the major players in our Solar System before returning to our own star, the Sun, featuring real solar footage captured from my backyard telescope setup. From there, we pull farther and farther back - past the stars of our night sky, beyond our local stellar neighborhood, until all of those familiar stars become just a tiny section of a single spiral arm of the Milky Way. We then continue past the Milky Way until we reach the edge of the observable universe.

In this video, I also break down redshift galaxies, what redshift actually means, and how redshift stretches the electromagnetic spectrum.

We finish with the incredible progress of the DESI Collaboration (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) and its massive 3D galaxy map project - one of the most ambitious attempts ever made to understand the structure and expansion of the universe. DESI is helping create the largest 3D map of the universe ever built, revealing how galaxies are distributed across billions of light-years of space and helping us better understand dark energy itself.

Additional universe visualizations in this video were created using Celestia through custom screen recordings and camera navigation.
