Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian fell in love and became husband and wife. During the Dragon Boat Festival, Bai Suzhen accidentally drank realgar wine, revealing her true snake form and terrifying Xu Xian almost to death. Heartbroken after Xu Xian recovered, Bai Suzhen decided to travel to Mount Kunlun to steal the immortal herb to save him.

After many dangers, she finally succeeded in saving Xu Xian.

However, news spread throughout Lin’an that Bai Suzhen was a demon, and she suffered persecution from the people. In order to protect her, Xu Xian swallowed a demonic pill called “Wanling Dan” and turned into a demon-like form, after which he was taken away by Fahai and imprisoned in Jinshan Temple.

After Bai Suzhen gave birth to a child, she was heavily punished and imprisoned under Leifeng Pagoda.

Bound by love and suffering, Bai Suzhen was trapped, while Xu Xian practiced medicine and accumulated virtue to save his wife. It was said that if the couple were ever to reunite, either Leifeng Pagoda must collapse or the West Lake must dry up.
