Based on bids from landscapers, Carol Kent saved well over $200K by doing her front and backyard succulent gardens herself!
What Carol has achieved on her quarter-acre residential lot shows what's possible at minimal cost, with a can-do attitude. Carol created a high-style, front-yard succulent tapestry complete with dry creek bed; and a backyard of gorgeous succulents and great stories.
""I love saving money,"" Carol says. ""When I was doing this, I'd check Craigslist several times a day."" Freebies included boulders, pebble topdressing, and decorative accessories. Carol, a former boat captain, gave one of her gardens an undersea theme. Husband Patrick helped with irrigation and electrical installation, and with hauling.
For ideas and techniques, Carol watched YouTube videos by San Diego landscaper Laura Eubanks of Design for Serenity. Laura, known for using mounded soil, boulders, swaths of rocks, colorful succulents, and dramatic statement plants, suggested I contact Carol to see ""an absolute DIY dream come true.""
I was there after Carol finished her front yard. ""It took me exactly two months,"" she says. Nearly all the succulents you'll see, she propagated herself, from cuttings.
