In this video, Ross (the Fig Boss) dives into the intricate world of fig breeding, explaining that, unlike traditional propagation from cuttings, growing from seed results in genetically unique "non-true to type" trees. He stresses that pollination is the critical first step; without it, seeds are hollow and non-viable. To overcome this, Ross uses a specific male caprifig (the UC Davis variety) to harvest pollen, which he then manually injects into female figs using a syringe. This "controlled" breeding method allows him to select for desirable traits, such as increased cold hardiness or improved fruit quality, which are not guaranteed when simply cloning a mother plant.
Once the pollinated fruit is harvested and dried, the seeds are germinated using a highly effective deli container hack. By using clear lids and pre-moistened soil, Ross creates a consistent microclimate that supports the 2–3 week germination window. The video concludes with the delicate "pricking out" phase, where he uses a pencil to gently lift the tiny seedlings into trays. He offers a vital word of caution: while many plants are resilient during transplanting, fig seedlings have exceptionally sensitive roots, and even minor damage during this stage can be fatal to the young tree.
