In my opinion, there are few things better than visiting a new location and getting the privilege to immerse myself in the culture, learn about the local history, and indulge in their culinary specialties. I got to do all three of those things and much more when I visited Japan back in January of 2019. This Asian island nation blew my mind from the moment I landed and didn’t let up until I was on my way back home twelve days later.

On my final night in Osaka, I wanted one last deep dive into the food scene in this amazing city, so I hit the town with my buddy Javier to find some incredible yakitori in the Shinsekai neighborhood! Come along with us as he shows me more of what Osaka has to offer!

The area was bright and lit up, but because it was a Sunday, there weren’t many people out. As we explored, we spotted an “All-You-Can-Drink” banner for a local spot and a giant pufferfish hanging above the street. There are giant likenesses of fish all over Osaka! We also passed a statue of the god Billiken, whose feet you rub for good luck. I gave them a good rub and a kiss for good measure!

We made our way to a newly-developed part of the downtown area called Tennoji that had just been built in the last couple of years and includes a large department store tower, a shopping mall, restaurants, and clothing outlets. It’s so modern and futuristic compared to the area we started in. From there, we made our way to an Izakaya called Torikizoku!

There were lots of interesting and delicious-looking options, including heart, chicken, and vegetables. We ordered seven different dishes and a Japanese spirit called shochu, which is made of barley and kind of like Japanese vodka.

Our meal started with cheese korokke, or cheese croquettes. I broke it open to let the steam out. These korokkes were filled with hot, gooey cheese and came with two dipping sauces: butter and ketchup. It was like an incredible cheese arepa with bechamel inside!

Our first yakitori was chicken balls with cheese, which was insanely good! After eating a yakitori, you put the wooden skewer in a little cup on your side of the table and you can count how many you had!

Next was mochi with cheese, sauce, and seaweed, which was unreal! It was the ultimate mochi! I followed that with karaage, or Japanese fried chicken. It was almost like a honey fried chicken, but without the honey, and the batter was out of this world! It was so juicy and had very little spices, but the flavor was still really unique and tasty!

Next, I moved on to the pork belly, which was nice and fatty and grilled to perfection. It wasn’t too chewy or too tender. It was just right! After that was beef with a nice sauce dripping off of it. It was so fresh and so high quality that it could have been wagyu beef!

My next yakitori was spicy grilled chicken with spring onions. It was super moist and had a nice crunch.

Then I went with the heart! It only had salt on it and was really dense, but so delicious! I love organ meat – it’s the best part of the animal!

Wow, what an outstanding meal! Meals like these are why I came to Japan! Everything was well-made and perfectly cooked because they actually time everything, so nothing is ever overcooked or undercooked. This was my most enjoyable meal in Japan so far, so I highly recommend you come to Torikizoku the next time you’re in Osaka!

I hope you enjoyed coming along with me and Javier for our incredible Yakitori and Shochu feast at Torikizoku! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss out on any of my upcoming travel and food content!
