Eight weeks into self-isolation, I had another craving for Indian food, so Ana and I decided to do a $50 Dahi Puri challenge at home! Come along with us as we take on this latest Indian street food challenge to see how many Dahi Puris we could eat!

Dahi Puri is one of the top Indian street foods from the state of Maharashtra. It comes from Mumbai, and it’s one of my absolute favorites. The dish consists of a fried, puffed-up flatbread called a puri, which you then fill with yogurt, potatoes, vegetables, and more. Usually, dahi puri is served six at a time, whereas its cousin, Pani Puri, which contains a spiced water instead of yogurt, is served one at a time.

We hit up Bollywood Masala, or favorite local Indian restaurant, so they gave us everything we’d need to build our own Dahi Puris! You pop a hole in the puri and fill it with potatoes, tamarind chutney, mint chutney, yogurt, sev, more yogurt, red onions, and cilantro. You can also add a spicy, red chutney, which contains chili flakes.

I was planning on beating my all-time record of 30-35 today. I wanted to go for 50! We popped open our first puris and added potato, a squirt of tamarind and mint chutneys, yogurt, sev, more yogurt, onions, and cilantro. The potatoes were nice and soft, while the puri and sev were crunchy. We fed each other the first ones. It’s super light and is a great dish for hot weather!

Then, we built our second puris and went from there. They were so tasty. You can find them everywhere in Mumbai—Mohammad Ali Road, the Mulund area, and so many others. For my fourth puri, I added some of the spicy, red chutney. The spice was so tasty!

The thing is, you can’t build the puris beforehand because they’ll get soggy and fall apart. We actually had some puris that we could fry up on another day!

While we continued to build, Ana came up with a fun idea: dessert puris containing Nutella! They would be out of control, for sure! Then, Ana built quite seven more so we could speed things along. I went through all seven super fast!

Then, I built a bunch for myself. I had to be delicate puncturing the puris—my fingers were too big and I broke some! I had a few more, and then Ana built another 12 for me. They were nice and spicy and tasty. I wanted to take my time with them and really enjoy them.

Ana built her final one, putting her at 15 total. Then, she built more for me, but it takes time to do it. They’re addictive, for sure, but are really filling after a while. They’re like the veg version of nachos!

What an awesome $50 Dahi Puri challenge! Next time you’re in Miami, hit up Bollywood Masala to do your own Puri challenge!
