I kicked off my trip to Los Angeles in the fall of 2021 by meeting up with my manager and good friend, Kyle Hjelmeseth, and his wife and beauty influencer Steph, to go on a spicy chicken adventure! Come with us as we compare and contrast Dave’s Hot Chicken and Sweet Chick!

Our fiery adventure kicked off at Dave’s Hot Chicken. One of their major investors is the rapper Drake, while Sweet Chick is backed by Nas. They have three combos (two tenders, two sliders, and one tender with one slider). All of their combos come with fries, and their chicken comes in seven spice levels.

We both got the one slider, one tender combo. But spice-level-wise, Kyle went with #4, which is medium, on the tender with a hot slider. I went with their Hot, which is #5. I love spice, but the #7, Reaper, would probably kill me!

They wound up giving us one Reaper tender along with bread and pickles. We went with the slider first, which was very juicy and wasn’t too hot. Kyle thought it was hot but doable. It was more of a backdoor heat that creeps up on you. The crunchy coleslaw was also great!

Kyle hadn’t gotten the hiccups yet, so it wasn’t too hot for him yet! We also got some extra Dave sauce and ate it with the fries. It was like a mix of ketchup and mayo. Then, we went for the Reaper tender.

It was moist and the heat snuck up on me. It wasn’t too bad, spice-wise! It wasn’t killer like I thought it would be. It got hotter as it went along, but it also had a nice sweetness that we also enjoyed. Then Kyle started getting the hiccups and his eyes started watering! It’s definitely a slow burn!

We both had to eat some honey to calm down the heat. But Steph said it wasn’t as hot as her mom’s cooking! Her family is from Sichuan, so she’s used to heat! But it had me melting! It had my head sweating!

The tenders were very large, juicy, and meaty. They were also lightly fried and didn’t have a crazy amount of batter on them. They were perfect!

Next, we drove to Sweet Chick on Fairfax. It started in New York and has now opened locations in LA and London. We went with their chicken and waffles and a Cool Kidz Juicy IPA. It’s all done through at QR code. The restaurant looked Southern but modern, very different from the quick casual Dave’s Hot Chicken. They had Nas’ music playing on the speakers.

The beer was a sessionable IPA. Then, I added syrup and hot sauce to my chicken and waffles. I loved the mix of sweet and spice. It was very enjoyable and more mild than Dave’s. The waffles were nice and fluffy, and I loved the huge portion—four waffles and four tenders!

The hot sauce also had a really good flavor. I thought it might be the best chicken and waffles in LA! Overall, we thought Dave’s was hot, but Sweet Chick’s had soul.

But what do you think? What’s your favorite chicken and waffles place in Los Angeles? Hit me up and let me know!
