Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

orchestration: 2 oboes, 3 basset horns, 1 contrabassoon, 2 horns and strings. The basset horn parts were written for fellow Freemasons Anton David and Vincent Springer. The player of the third part is unknown.

Written for a Lodge of Sorrows (memorial service, November 17, 1785) for Duke Georg August of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Count Franz Esterházy von Galántha. Some of the large wind band was added at the last minute. Mozart incorporates the plainchant "tonus peregrinus", with its reference to the Lamentation chant used in Passion Week and the Miserere of the Requiem ceremony.
