Trump Says Talks With Cuba Ongoing, Action Possible After Iran
President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States could soon reach a deal with Cuba or take other action, signaling that developments in the long-strained relationship may come quickly.
“Cuba also wants to make a deal, and I think we will pretty soon either make a deal or do whatever we have to do,” Trump said to reporters on Air Force One. “We're talking to Cuba, but we’re going to do Iran before Cuba.”
Trump had made a series of statements in recent weeks to the effect that Cuba was on the verge of collapse or eager to make a deal with the United States. He said last week that Cuba might be subject to a “friendly takeover,” but then added that “it may not be a friendly takeover.”
Cuba is enduring more blackouts and severe fuel shortages as countries across the region stop supplying oil. The United States has effectively cut off oil exports to the island, accusing the communist regime of aligning with hostile foreign powers and terrorist groups.
