For a brief decade, American engineers attempted to solve Arctic logistics by building "land trains"—colossal, articulated vehicles designed to traverse roadless permafrost. Led by R.G. LeTourneau, these diesel-electric leviathans spanned nearly 600 feet. They utilized massive low-pressure tires to distribute weight so effectively that they left tracks lighter than a human footprint.

Despite their ambition, the project failed. Some units suffered catastrophic mechanical issues or lacked traction on ice. Ultimately, even the successful models were rendered obsolete by the arrival of heavy-lift helicopters, which could simply fly over obstacles. Today, the surviving machines rust in junkyards or sit in museums, relics of a time when we believed sheer scale could conquer nature.
