Jacques-Louis David, from a young age, was determined to succeed, and after overcoming several losses in the Prix de Rome, he finally won and then accompanied his teacher to the Eternal City. From Rome and returning to France, he became the very center of the art world and the political world, too. He rose to great heights and then scandal, his politics became suspect, for which he had to flee to the Netherlands, but his exile had a new purpose: that of training great students into great painters.
