There’s just something about a steam engine. The combination of fire and water to create power and movement in a machine that seems almost alive as it breathes and hisses. Many of our contemporary O gauge model train layouts are populated by models of steam engines - more than 70 years after their their use on actual railroads became rare. But regardless of whether our model is Thomas The Tank Engine or Big Boy - it’s still just a model - impersonating the fire-breathing prototypes with electric motors and fake smoke and chugging sounds.

That’s why I was so excited when the folks at Stirling Kit offered me the chance to build, operate, and review a REAL steam engine. That’s right - a real fire breathing, water heating, steam spewing, piston churning steam engine!

Now, while this is not a steam locomotive - it’s a stationary model that will operate on my workbench, not my layout - it still shares all of the major features and functions of the real thing - from tank engine - to Big Boy. And, it's FUN!
